Even in an age of widespread access to news and information, it's still not easy for Chicagoans to find and access meaningful representations of their neighborhoods, communities, and traditions. The Media Burn Independent Video Archive collects and presents over 6,000 nonfiction videotapes created by hundreds of different artists. It forms an unmatched portrait of life in Chicago from 1968-2011, created by individuals with a deeply rooted commitment to using video to give a voice to Chicago's people and communities. Media Burn brings these vibrant works out of basements and closets, restores them to their original condition, and makes them freely available on mediaburn.org. Studs Terkel wrote in 2006, "Media Burn is an invaluable continuation of the oral history work I have been doing for decades. The videos in the Media Burn collection are about understanding who people are, what they do, how they work, and how they think.
