Surfrider is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves, and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research, and education. Surfrider has more than 50,000 members and 60 local chapters in the U.S. (plus additional international affiliates). The Chicago Chapter serves the coastline of Chicago, NW Indiana, and NE Illinois. We share a love of water, waves, beaches, and coastlines of all types: oceans, lakes, rivers, swimming holes, or creeks! We want to make a difference in protecting our environment, both worldwide and here in Illinois; a state obviously known as much for the Mississippi River and thousands of square miles of black topsoil farmland as it is for its Great Lakes shoreline. We do this by applying our resources to local/regional campaigns that fit these requirements. We're currently involved in a RISE ABOVE PLASTICS ban of single use plastic bags at stores larger than 5000 square feet.
