Everyday Real Estate Transactions Can Help Provide Access to Vital Legal Aid
Coordinated Advice and Referral Program for Legal Services (CARPLS) is the largest provider of free legal advice in Cook County. As a member of Investing In Communities®, CARPLS can receive funding as a result of any real estate transaction – home sales, home purchases, or commercial leases. CARPLS has already received $5,753 through Investing In Communities. As more supporters use this platform, at no cost to them, CARPLS will have to help those who most need free legal advice will have access to it.
Client Services
There is a broad range of subjects that CARPLS can provide assistance on. One such service is the free legal aid hotline with attorneys on call to respond to any legal inquiry from low-income residents of Chicago. In addition, CARPLS offers free legal services to Veterans and Military Service Members.
Access to Justice
CARPLS helps residents find assistance through a hotline and document preparation at county courthouses. All of CARPLS’ attorneys are compassionate and experienced. CARPLS does not actually represent individuals in court, but does provide self-help centers so that people can represent themselves. CARPLS also refer individuals to law firms, according to their needs.
Since its founding, CARPLS’ staff attorneys and volunteer attorneys have assisted with nearly one million legal questions. This Chicago-based organization has become a model for other states in providing legal services and advice to their underprivileged communities.
