Buying, Selling, and Leasing Can Help Protect the Health of Infants
HealthConnect One has developed a one-of-a-kind community-based doula program, which has been used across the country to provide new mothers with critical support for healthy pregnancies and births, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds. As a member of Investing in Communities®, HC One can receive funding from any brokered real estate transaction, including home sales and purchases and leases for office, retail, and industrial space. $10,300 has already been raised as a result of 2 transactions. When supporters use this platform, at no cost to themselves, HealthConnect One will have more resources to help parents provide a healthy, happy start to their new babies’ lives.
At its core, HC One’s mission is healthier babies. Relying on evidence-based data, this national organization identifies ways to improve birth equity, giving all families the same opportunities to birth and raise thriving children. Since 1986, HC One has partnered with local agencies to ensure expectant parents are armed with the knowledge and tools they need and that this powerful support is not limited to a certain income bracket.
Community-Based Doulas
A doula is a trained support person who guides an expectant mother through her pregnancy and labor and through the early weeks of caring for her infant. HC One has seen that a doula’s advice and comfort can positively impact new mothers’ experiences by improving prenatal care, reducing the need for C-section deliveries and promoting parenting skills that ensure children’s healthy development. That is why HC One is dedicated to giving more families the option to use a doula, especially those in low-income communities.
HC One has developed a Community-Based Doula Program Model that has now helped more than 6,000 low-income families. By offering support and training to local doulas, HC One ensures that families can connect with someone in their community. This grassroots approach has proved successful because local doulas can more effectively relay vital information by bridging any language or cultural barriers that might exist.
Breastfeeding Support
To improve the health of babies in all communities, HC One is also committed to increasing breastfeeding rates through its Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training. Data has shown that exclusively breastfeeding a baby for the first six months can reduce the risk of pediatric diseases, including sudden infant death syndrome and childhood obesity. HC One helps local agencies start breastfeeding support programs in their communities. It also trains counselors who can effectively communicate the importance of breastfeeding to new parents.
Advocating for Better Policies
In addition to offering successful program models, HealthConnect One is an advocate for improving nationwide policies that affect infants’ health. From guaranteeing paid family leave when a baby is born to increasing mothers’ breastfeeding support in the workplace, HC One gives voice to families’ concerns, aiming to remove obstacles to healthy pregnancies and parenting for all.
