Hesed House is an Aurora homeless shelter devoted to offering accessible housing, nutritious food, clothes, and other services. As a member of Investing In Communities®, this organization can receive funding as a result of any real estate transaction – home sales, home purchases, or commercial leases. Already, $4,000 has been raised through Investing In Communities from a single office lease renewal. As more supporters use this platform, at no cost to themselves, the more resources Hesed will have to help move people from homelessness to stable housing and hopefulness.
A volunteer homeless shelter formed in the 1980s, Hesed traces back to a grassroots coalition of six churches and other concerned citizens. After almost three decades, they have developed into the most robust Illinois homeless shelter outside of Chicago. Each year, upwards of 6,000 volunteers from 90 local churches contribute their time and energy to support the mission of the largest shelter in the state, outside of Chicago.
In 2018 alone, this exemplary organization achieved 1,798 positive outcomes for homeless individuals and families. These positive outcomes occurred across 15 core areas, such as mental/physical health, child services, employment, and housing. More recently, they received coverage in the Lincoln Times News for providing improved benefits to the homeless and winning the support of Emilio Estevez to raise awareness on the impact of homelessness.
In order to properly assist the homeless population in Aurora, they offer various programs, including Seeds Case Management, PADS Emergency Shelter, and The Harbor Permanent Supportive Housing initiatives.
Seeds Case Management
The Seeds Case Management program dispenses 1-1 support to the homeless population around fair and suitable housing. Homeless individuals and families work directly with volunteers on a comprehensive basis, working to:
- Pinpoint barriers blocking the homeless from securing proper housing;
- Develop an achievable plan to overcome housing barriers; and
- Carry out the plan to help the homeless be able to move out of Hesed House.
PADS Emergency Shelter
The PADS Emergency Shelter program is an overnight facility serving an average of 175 men, women, and children every night. This program enables the homeless population to get a good night’s sleep, clean their clothes, shower and wash, eat a meal, and even locate necessary support services.
The PADS Emergency Shelter operates 365 days/year from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Staffed by volunteers from more than 70 faith-based organizations, this program provides a safe place for the homeless and their families. The people who stay overnight at this emergency shelter also receive breakfast and a packed lunch the next morning.
Harbor Permanent Supportive Housing
The Harbor Permanent Supportive Housing program exists to secure permanent and acceptable housing for the most vulnerable homeless individuals. These at-risk people generally suffer from debilitating conditions, such as mental illness, substance abuse, or physical disability.
In the Harbor program, these vulnerable homeless individuals live in a dormitory facility with on-call staff to assist at any hour of the day. Residents can benefit from assistance with basic tasks, such as cooking or cleaning, as well as counseling and medical treatment. Homeless individuals who rank extremely high on the vulnerability scale are eligible to participate in this program.
