Rugby Illinois (RI) is dedicated to the facilitation and growth of youth rugby in Illinois on behalf of USA Rugby, its national counterpart. Every qualifying transaction provides funding to Rugby Illinois to serve more communities and advance its mission of helping Illinois youth become better equipped for successful lives through teamwork, self discipline and the joy of learning and playing rugby.

Rugby Illinois is affiliated with  World Rugby, whose international operation has promoted men’s rugby since 1886.  World Rugby operates in over 100 countries spanning six continents with female and male participants of all ages. RI focuses on youth in high school and lower grades. It also supports girls rugby and runs Illinois Tornadoes rugby, the high school select side for girls.

Why Support Rugby?

Compared to traditional American youth sports, rugby is considered more physical and more team-focussed. While a star player can stand out on a basketball court or a football field, it takes the efforts and focus of an entire team to win in rugby. Whether it’s boys rugby or girls rugby, young people introduced to the sport are taught focus, teamwork and goal-setting as they set out to master this sport. 

Support for rugby in Chicago has been growing, thanks to a few major events. The largest of these  is Rugby Weekend Chicago.  Every November, a series of rugby matches is played at Soldier Field, helping to expose boys and girls to the sport on a grand level, as well as connecting families to Rugby Illinois for league information in their town or region of the state.

Girls Rugby

When girls rugby came to Illinois in 2002, the sport attracted a handful of participants at the high school level. Now the sport is flourishing, with leagues expanding to 6th – 8th graders. For girls interested in the sport, popular misconceptions are thrown right out the door. Girls rugby reminds people what we already know – that girls are as tough as boys and have the determination, the teamwork and the individual drive to succeed. Efforts to expand girls rugby have been met with some of the most supportive parents and volunteers the organization has seen since coming to Illinois.

Illinois Tornadoes Rugby

Illinois Tornadoes Rugby is the all star team comprised of the best boys playing the sport in Illinois. All-State coaches select exceptional and promising athletes to participate on the Illinois Tornadoes rugby team and receive special coaching and training. The team is known throughout all-state competition circles for embodying the team name on their jerseys. Like other youth rugby teams, the experience of participating in an all state competition is often one of the most noteworthy events of a young athlete’s career.
