Buying, Selling, & Leasing Can Help Bring Meals to People In Need

Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois (MWNI), with the help of their hundreds of volunteers, provides thousands of meals to home-bound seniors and disabled individuals in Northeastern Illinois. As a member of Investing In Communities®, MWNI can receive funding as a result of just about any brokered real estate transaction – home sales, home purchases, and commercial leases. This free-to-use platform enables supporters to directly support MWNI at no cost to themselves. By choosing to go through Investing In Communities before engaging a real estate agent, you can support MWNI’s work delivering nutritious meals to seniors aging at home and disabled members of the community.

Meals on Wheels was a community-wide response to a community need. A group of concerned Illinois residents in 1968 recruited volunteers to help with meal delivery for people in the community who could not prepare food for themselves, and this operation has been carried out by MWNI ever since. While the original demographic served was limited to homebound seniors with a tight budget, MWNI brings meals to families dealing with a temporary medical situation and people with mental or physical disabilities that inhibit their independence and make it impossible for them to prepare and shop for food.

Meal Delivery

MWNI was founded with the mission of meal delivery and this remains their flagship program. Meals are prepared fresh every day, and delivered by volunteers twice a day, six days a week. For homebound seniors, these meals enable them to maintain a lifestyle of independence and stability.

Friendly Visits

People need to eat to live, but they also need friends and community. Meals on Wheels is friendly, caring neighbors taking time for friendly visits to those who lack the independence and mobility to get out and make connections on their own, such as those living with disabilities or aging at home.

Shopping Assistance

MWNI volunteers provide shopping assistance for members of the community who cannot go to the store themselves. Volunteers deliver the basic toiletries and ingredients needed at no additional cost beyond the cost of the items themselves. Many participants in this program, however, do receive scholarships and discounts, depending on their level of income.

Your Purchase, Sale, or Lease Helps Feed Seniors and People With Disabilities

For example, the purchase or sale of a $300,000 home can result in about $1,300 of free funding.
