Buying, Selling, and Leasing Can Help More Women Access Careers in STEM
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) has been a champion for women in engineering fields for over seventy years. As a member of Investing in Communities®, SWE can receive funding as a result of a home sale, home purchase or commercial lease. Already $2,429 has been raised through Investing In Communities. The more that supporters use this free platform, the more resources SWE will have to promote and support women in engineering professions.
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational and service organization that supports and empowers women to succeed in engineering and technology professions. According to Forbes magazine, “the computer science and engineering fields have the highest return on investment compared to any other field of study, [consequently] these jobs play an important role in the future of women and our world.”
Founded in 1950, SWE supports public policy initiatives that advance women in these fields. It provides women engineers with an exciting array of training and professional development programs, networking opportunities, scholarships, outreach and advocacy activities.
SWE has over 37,000 members, both academic and professional, across the United States. To advance its mission, the organization creates programs designed to inspire and develop the next generation of female engineers and technologists. Its strategic goals and objectives include:
- Professional excellence – providing flexible benefits in the areas of mentoring, training, personal and professional growth;
- Globalization – serving women engineers wherever they are;
- Advocacy – supporting the inclusion and success of women, now and in the future, in engineering and technology; and
- Diversity and inclusion – promoting a community where the engineering profession welcomes and respects individual, personal and career choices amongst all cultures.
Programs and Initiatives
SWE advances its mission through a variety of programs and initiatives, including scholarships, awards and annual conferences. To enable more women to pursue higher education degrees in STEM fields, SWE offers a scholarship program that in 2019 alone provided over $810,000 in financial assistance to 260 women. The organization highlights and supports outstanding efforts of individuals and teams through various awards, like the SWENext awards.
SWE members enjoy timely information and tools to enhance their understanding of relevant industry issues, and encourage volunteer participation at the federal level. Overall, SWE gives members a unique place and voice. Women are using those voices to promote engineering and technology industries as relevant and natural for women, and to raise awareness of the transformative work they do inspiring, supporting and positively impacting women on their own terms.
