Buying, Selling, & Leasing Can Support Sunflower City

Sunflower City (SC) is helping Chicago neighborhoods celebrate their own beauty and utilize vacant land. As a member of Investing In Communities®, Sunflower City can receive funding as a result of any brokered real estate transaction – home sales, home purchases, or commercial leases. At no cost to themselves, supporters can use this free platform before engaging a real estate agent to directly support SC as they work to promote urban agriculture and beautify suburban areas in Chicago.

It all started with a research project in 2012. With the intention of finding a crop that enriched the soil while also beautifying a suburban neighborhood and producing an oil seed to be used for clean plant based fuel, Sunflower City got its birth at the corner of 43rd and Greenwood in Chicago. When the neighborhood showed support and interest in the idea, the research project grew into an organization that now mobilizes the community to clean up and put to use its vacant land.

Flower Power

By using and teaching Cut Flower farming techniques, SC  helps Chicago residents make their neighborhood more beautiful, while also opening up a new form of income. SC is supporting urban agriculture and researching ways to use sunflowers to create plant based fuel to replace petroleum. Additionally, they are committed to showing members of Chicago communities how growing plants such as sunflowers not only brings dignity and revenue to their community, but also enriches the soil and counteracts harmful pollutants such as lead contamination in urban soil.

Beautification and the City

Taking the time to beautify a community not only makes it more attractive, it also celebrates the dignity and worth of the community. Sunflower City believes this work is important for all of Chicago.

Cut Flowers

Not only are flowers a way to make a neighborhood look more beautiful and dignified, cut flower farming can actually generate revenue, too. SC supports urban agriculture initiatives and puts a special focus on introducing children to urban agriculture, horticulture, and environmental stewardship practices.

Research and Development

Most people do not realize that plant based fuel can actually replace petroleum in many cases, offering a cleaner, more environmentally friendly source of fuel. Furthermore, the sunflower crops enrich the soil and combat pollution, such as damaging lead contamination. SC conducts research on plant oil and soil health and disseminates their findings into the community.

Your Purchase, Sale, or Lease Helps Dignity and Revenue to Chicago Communities

At no cost to themselves, anyone who cares about putting vacant land to good use for the community can turn virtually any brokered real estate transaction into funding for Sunflower City. For example, the purchase or sale of a $300,000 home can result in about $1,300 of free funding.
