Mission of Trout Valley Restoration Society
The Trout Valley Restoration Society’s mission is to raise funds to restore the historical structures and common grounds in the community. To date, fundraising has mainly concentrated on the preservation of the Trout Ponds that were part of the original concept for the estate designed by the famous landscape architect Jens Jensen’s. The Society is seeking additional funds to continue the preservation and restoration of the buildings and structures which have received plaques by the McHenry County Historical Society, including the barn built in 1890.
Trout Valley is a small community that is administered by a Home Owners Association and was originally the estate of John D. Hertz, the founder of Hertz Car Rentals. In 1952, the estate was sold and redeveloped as a housing subdivision.
Our Labor of Love Requires Capital
The Society is raising funds to restore structures, grounds and amenities of the original Hertz Estate. Many of the structures in Trout Valley are nearing the end of their useful life and are in need of being restored. The Home Owners Association estimates the cost of restoration work to be $700,000. Special assessments from HOA members are difficult to enact due a super majority required in order to approve a new assessment. Approximately 10 years ago, prior to the Restoration Society being founded, a group of residents raised about $150,000 through fundraising events in order to preserve and restore a nine acre natural area that is a fen.
History of Trout Valley
The Trout Valley Restoration Society was founded in 2013 to continue the initial restoration work completed in the fen area. The Society was started by a group of residents and, in the early years, not much fundraising was achieved. Recently, with new leadership on the Society’s Board, solicitation of funds has accelerated and new fundraising ideas are being implemented. Hopefully the residents will support the Investing In Communities program when they purchase or sell their Trout Valley homes.
Stocking the Ponds and Other Initiatives
One of the most important programs is to keep the trout ponds stocked with trout. Although fly fishing for trout is catch and release, the community does loose trout from the fish being caught by herons, raccoons and other wild life. Each year the HOA purchases trout along with blue gills and fat head minnows to support the fishing enjoyment of residents. Historically, donations of approximately $4,000 have been raised each year to restock the ponds and this fundraising will be undertaken by the Society. As the name of the community implies, the trout ponds are integral to our identity and fishing for trout is an important recreational activity.
Other initiatives include:
- Restoration of the park area on the Fox River is currently being planned and fundraising is in progress;
- Installation of a trout sculpture in Trout Valley is also being planned and fundraising is in progress;
- Trout Valley is designated a Tree Community by the Arbor Foundation. In order to retain this designation, funds are procured through the Society to plant new trees each year; and
- Develop and maintain pollinator habitat.
