Buying, Selling, and Leasing Can Help Christian Leaders Follow Their Calling
Since 1866, Western Theological Seminary (WTS) has prepared Christian ministers to provide spiritual guidance to culturally diverse communities. As a member of Investing In Communities®, Western Seminary can receive funding from any real estate transaction — home sales, home purchases, or commercial leases. So far, $1,237 has been raised through IIC. The more supporters that use this platform, at no cost to themselves, the more resources the Seminary has to offer affordable, advanced education to students determined to strengthen and spread Christianity.
Located in Holland, Michigan, Western Theological Seminary has several degree programs, including a Doctor of Ministry and a Master of Divinity, with the option to also pursue a Master of Social Work. These programs prepare students to become ordained ministers through academic study and in-person training. The Seminary offers both on-campus and online learning, creating flexible pathways for students who have competing work and family responsibilities. With increased funding, the Seminary can continue to offer scholarships and low tuition rates so that students can pursue their goals of becoming change-making pastors, teachers, and counselors.
Guided by The Reformed Church in America
The Western Theological Seminary is founded on the principles of the Reformed Church in America (RCA), which is rooted in the Dutch Reformed Church brought to the U.S. in the 17th century. This Protestant denomination has a ministry-focused mission to grow Christian congregations across the world, developing spiritual leaders who deepen followers’ faith while also helping those in need. Additionally, the RCA has a multicultural focus, which is integrated into WTS’s degree programs through immersion trips to places like India, Mexico, and Brazil.
The Seminary’s Curricular Values
The Western Theological Seminary’s curriculum is led by several core values that align with the Reformed Church in America’s tradition. All coursework is steeped in Scripture, utilizing the Bible as an educational tool to deepen understanding. Worship takes place every day, gathering students to pray as a community. Students do not only learn in the classroom, but are also prepared to become practitioners through supervised ministry placements and summer internships. These experiential learning opportunities aim to further students’ abilities and deepen their dedication.
The Bast Preaching Festival
The Seminary’s Bast Preaching Festival encourages the continued education of powerful preachers through speakers and workshops. The festival brings leading talent from around the world together to help ministers improve their public speaking and develop creative ways of impacting their audiences. For example, the 2019 Bast Preaching Festival featured Rev. Timothy Blackman, the chaplain of Wheaton College, who gave advice on speaking confidently in tumultuous times.
