Real Estate Transactions Can Promote Sustainable Farming & Agriculture with the Critter Barn
The Critter Barn is an organization based in West Michigan that implements and promotes sustainable agricultural practices in the modern farming environment. As a member of Investing In Communities®, the Critter Barn can benefit from most traditional real estate transactions, including purchases and sales of homes and leases of commercial space. Already, $765 has been raised through just one transaction. When supporters use this platform, at no cost to themselves, they can help the Critter Barn spread appreciation for farming, animals, and nature.
The roots of the Critter Barn stretch back to 1984, when it had only a few animals and a small barn. Before long, children from local schools began visiting the barn to learn about farm animals and agricultural techniques. Over time, the barn gained popularity and developed into a West Michigan attraction with more than 100,000 visitors.
In 2016, the Barn to Farm initiative entered the first phase of transforming what was a simple barn and critter farm into a full-fledged educational and recreational destination. With more than 27 acres in Zeeland Township, the new facility will greatly improve the Critter Barn’s ability to showcase sustainable farming practices.
In addition to the Barn to Farm initiative, the Critter Barn spearheads numerous special events throughout the year to maximize its reach and impact, including Sheep Shearing, Spring Fling, and Live Nativity.
Sheep Shearing
The Sheep Shearing event occurs in February of each year. This age-old tradition showcases the process of shearing woolen fleece from sheep. Visitors gather in the classroom to learn about shearing techniques. Then there is a live shearing demonstration of ewes, lambs, and wethers.
Spring Fling
The Spring Fling is an event that occurs every day over the course of an entire week in April. When the weather changes from spring to summer, there are many exciting things that happen on a farm. Among other fascinating experiences, visitors can meet newborn animals, such as calves, bunnies, chicks, ducklings, kids, and lambs.
Live Nativity
The Live Nativity event occurs in December of each year to celebrate Christmas in a unique fashion. This event gives visitors an opportunity to imagine what it was like during the first Christmas and the birth of Jesus. With angels, cows, sheep, and shepherds — not to mention decorations throughout the indoor facility — this Christmas event is truly one of a kind.
